Confidentiality Policy
All patient records and any other information of a private or sensitive nature are considered confidential. Confidential information should not be read or discussed by any student unless pertaining to his or her specific patient care responsibilities. Discussions of confidential information must take place in private settings away from patients or members of the public. Students may not discuss or reveal confidential information to friends or family members or to other individuals who do not have a legitimate need to know. The disclosure of a patient's presence in the Pavilion, clinics, hospitals, or other campus facility may indicate the nature of the illness and jeopardize confidentiality.
The unauthorized disclosure of confidential information by a student may subject the institution to legal liability. Disclosure of confidential information to unauthorized persons, or unauthorized access to, or misuse, theft, destruction, alteration, or sabotage of such information, is grounds for immediate disciplinary action up to and including termination. Alleged violations of these policies and standards are investigated jointly by the Medical Center Office of Compliance and the associate dean for academic affairs.
